William Ostrander Chapin

William Chapin, known by most simply as Bill, was a longtime resident of Umpqua, Oregon, where he made his home overlooking the Umpqua River. Alongside his beloved wife, Peggy, of nearly 74 years, Bill created a warm and loving gathering place for family and friends at their cherished River Home. Bill passed peacefully at home on August 12.

Bill was born on January 15, 1932, in Van Etten, New York, to Oscar Hilan Chapin and Francis Leone Dinehart. He grew up in the aftermath of the Great Depression and watched as his older brothers left home to serve in World War II. Bill and his brother Edward remained behind and participated in the Farm Cadet Program.

Bill graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1950. To celebrate their graduation, Bill and a friend scrambled onto the school roof and painted "1950," a mark that remained visible for decades afterward. In their own way, they truly left their mark.

Shortly after graduation, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During a USO dance in Tennessee, he met his future bride, Peggy Bruce. They were married in 1952 and began a life together that would span nearly three-quarters of a century.

Bill continued his education and eventually graduated from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo with a degree in Mathematics. During his career with Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, he had the opportunity to work on the TIROS 1 weather satellite project. Using little more than his mathematical skill, ingenuity, and a slide rule, Bill was instrumental in calculating the trajectory figures needed for the satellite's successful launch and orbit.

Over the years, Bill held a variety of positions, including work at Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, California, and at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He retired in 1990 and, in time, purchased property along the Umpqua River, where he and Peggy built the retirement home that would become the heart of their family gatherings.

As their family grew and spread to different places, the River Home remained a special destination where everyone could return, reconnect, share stories, and enjoy good times together. It was a place filled with love, laughter, and memories that will endure for generations.

Bill was known for his strong work ethic and unwavering integrity. He was a steadfast supporter of his family and was always willing to offer advice, lend a helping hand, or simply listen with a sympathetic ear. His wisdom, kindness, and quiet strength touched the lives of many. His presence will be deeply missed.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Francis; his brothers, Hilan, Frederick, Charles, and Edward; and his grandson, Paul.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy; his son, Bill; daughters, Debbie and Terry; grandchildren, Chad, Greg, Kevin, Ashley, Jennifer, Heather, Becky, and David; and great-

grandchildren, Bomin, Payton, Danika, Tatum, Adeline, Jessa, Charlotte, Harper, and Joseph. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and extended family members.

Bill leaves behind a lifetime of accomplishments, but perhaps his greatest legacy is the family he loved and the home he and Peggy created together. The River Home will forever hold the memories of a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend whose life made a lasting difference in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
