Shirley Willian (Shrum) Melvin age 98 of Glide, Oregon passed away August 4th, 2025. Shirley was born March 28th, 1927 in Roseburg, Oregon, the daughter of Thomas Eugene (Gene) Shrum and Mary Willian (Casebeer) Shrum. Shirley looked forward to the day she would finally meet her mother in heaven, who died shortly after her birth. Shirley grew up with deep roots in the Glide area. Her father and mother's families were both pioneers to Glide, obtaining original land claims upon arrival by wagon.
Shirley graduated from Roseburg High School in 1945. She completed one year of college at Oregon State University in Home Economics. Herbert Garfield Melvin married Shirley on February 8th, 1947. They remained married 46 years until his death. Remaining to cherish Shirley's memory is her brother Tom Shrum (age 101), children; Kathy Kinyon (spouse Kay), Jean Horne (spouse Jim), John Melvin (spouse Karen), Marsha Ruhn and Sara Melvin, and eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Preceding Shirley in death are her spouse Herbert Melvin, grandchild; Kristopher Kinyon, parents; Thomas and Mary, and stepmother Florence and siblings; Kenneth and David, and son in law John Ruhn.
Shirley worked as the Head Cook at Glide High School. She was active in Glide Baptist Church teaching Sunday School, choir, bible studies, vacation bible school, and participated in Ladies Aide. Shirley spent many hours a day reading and craving God's word right up until her last day. She crocheted and knitted hundreds of hats, scarves, and blankets in affiliation with Guideposts and World Vision: Knit for Kids, which were distributed all over the world for those less fortunate. Shirley was known for her homemaking skills which she generously passed on in her many years as a 4-H leader, teaching kids to sew, knit, and bake. Those lucky enough to be taught by her learned the importance of a seam ripper! She was the Queen of Canning. Her daughters can attest to many summer days filling jars of produce. She made Christmas ornaments for her grandkids every year, graduation afghans, and custom-made knit Christmas Stockings for her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. She will also be remembered for her ability to grow beautiful African Violets.
Shirley's life was a testament to the quiet power of service and love-her hands shaped more than dough and yarn; they nurtured generations. She leaves behind not only a family enriched by her wisdom and warmth, but a community forever changed by her steadfast example.
