He began his racing career on the dirt tracks of Medford, Oregon, in the early 1970s, later moving to Roseburg in the mid-1980s, where he transitioned to racing on asphalt. He became well known throughout the Northwest racing community driving his iconic #18 car, not just for his accomplishments behind the wheel, but for his generosity in helping other drivers, his volunteer work with the local racing association, and his enduring love for the sport. Harlan was the first generation of Koens racers, followed by his son Wade in 2003, and his grandson Andrew in 2015, forming a proud three-generation racing tradition.
