Dorthie Havel (White) Havel

February 19, 1925 — December 7, 2016

Our Mother, DORTHIE MARIE WHITE HAVEL, 91 of Roseburg, passed peacefully away at her home on December 7, 2016 surrounded by her family and caregiver Theresa. Dorthie grew up in the center of the Dust Bowl and lived through the Great Depression. During WW II she worked doing reclamation of crashed military planes as a "Rosie the Riveter" and learned mechanics. She met adversity head on and found a solution to any dilemma. One of her favorite expressions was, "If someone else can do it, so can I". During lean and harsh years Mom canned all the food we could glean to see her family through the winter. Working alongside our Father, Charles Edward Havel, she helped build our home, one room at a time as they had money to pay for the materials. Mom worked in the office of Montgomery Ward while it was located on Jackson Street, produced collectable china at Violetta's, became Manager of King's Table, owned and operated Dorthie's Cakes making coveted wedding cakes and then went on to excel at helping people attain health and life insurance with Banker's Life and Casualty. Dorthie was an extremely accomplished and capable woman. Mom never met a stranger. Dorthie and Charles spent many winters "snowbirding" to Southern California and Arizona. After Dorthie was widowed she continued to snowbird and travel with family on many adventures. Dorthie's husband of 42 years, Charles, preceded her in death in 1989. She is also preceded in death by one sister, one brother and her parents. Survivors include 5 children: Jerry McCrackin, Jack Havel, Linda Denney, Robert Havel and Larry Havel; 15 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and 4 of her 6 brother's and sisters. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Private entombment will be held within the grounds of Roseburg Memorial Gardens.
